The Elemental Allies sidequest for Mage doesn't summon anything, it draws 3 spells.
Overall, both Elemental Allies and Animated Avalanche need a couple of additional cheap Elementals for them to work well in Standard, as is you'll need to play stuff like Quicksand Elemental and Fire Hawk to have enough early Elementals. That's including the other Elemental in Galakrond's Awakening. In Wild there's enough good early game options with Fire Fly, Glacial Shard, Tar Creeper, Arcane Artificer and others.
