Tutorial: How to get Diablo 2 to work on Windows 10, 8.1, 8 and 7

Three simple steps that will fix most problems with Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction to get working on modern computers. (Windows 10 — Windows 8 — Windows 8.1 — Windows 7)

► Compatibility Mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
► Run As Administrator Mode
► Windowed Mode.

When in windowed mode you can resize the screen by double clicking the top bar and it will maximize to your screen resolution.

Putting the game in Windowed mode will help reduce frame rate drops. There is also a glide wrapper you could use that will help with additional performance issues : http://www.svenswrapper.de/english/
I personally do not use this for streaming on Twitch.

I have also included a Battle.net tip that will avoid spam bots in channels.
► When in a channel type «/home ‘channel name’ » and it will set a default channel when you log into Battle.net.

**Please remember you will need the original Diablo 2 game if you want to use Lord of Destruction expansion pack!! **

If you have your CD Keys you can also register them to your Battle.net Account so you won’t need to go finding those keys or cds again!

You man also need to run a Video Test. This is located in the Diablo 2 folder and should fix other graphic issues.

You may also want to adjust Lightning Quality and Blending Shadows in the Diablo II game itself for additional performance. (Thanks mresurm)

  10. I watched the video and I have windows 10. However these changes didn't work. I cant add the -w to run it in windows mode it says The name "D:Diablo IIDiablo II.exe"-w specified in the target box is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct. Also if I don't change the -w and try to run Diablo II. The game just drops after trying to run with a slight try with a black screen.

  12. Wow I got it to work in full screen on windows 10. Without being in windows mode :). I just had to restart the computer and do all the rest of the things you showed in your video. Thank you very much for all your help!!!!

  13. I used full screen for my first two sessions. It worked fine. Then the next day the game kept sending me back to my desktop. So is there no way to play full screen?

  14. Wow… I had my doubts, due to my terrible luck finding fruitful online solutions, if at all, but THIS-THIS WORKED!
    If you make it no further than this first statement of my comment, I will say it up front- Thank you oh so much.
    And now a short story, if you will.

    SOMEHOW I avoided the MASS "Skynet" takeover that took place several years ago via Windows 10. Though I believe it was from having this particular system powered off throughout Microsoft's entire surge period of unwarranted OS "updates", I really couldn't tell you how I truly managed it.
    Despite my Connoresk paranoia/pride and feeling rebelliously victorious concerning the whole situation, I digress.
    Recently assimilated my lone Windows 7 sporting laptop willingly.
    Everything has been running fine so far with only one issue… Upon my first attempts at starting Diablo 2 LOD on this newly installed OS, I was met with a full black screen I could only exit with the Windows Start Key.

    "UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: access_violation (c0000005)," read a tiny window on my desktop.

    I spent hours toiling over tiresome forums, finding only pointless bickering between commenters and several unsuccessful "fixes." A royal pain in my mind and almost left regretting the update, I say again, THANK YOU!

  16. i do everything and still have the same problem, unsupported graphics mode, i am on windows 10…… i dont have the d2vidtst.Exe, cant find it

  27. my game dosent even get to that point im stuck and idk what to do it wont even launch it states something about not being able to use direct x or something

  30. I don't see an option for running the 3d on for the cbackgrounds or a resolution change option in the settings or the ability to enlarge the very small screen. I have the game as if I do not own a GPU in the year 2000 and its sooo small. Any help. BTW I only have Dianblo 2..I do not own the expansion, but it is running off the digital download fro Blizzard's site.

  33. you have same issue as me but you dont seem to notice it, in top left corner the alphabet is being cycled thrue along with and sign on a keyboard. it bugs the hell out of me and it just started so its not a issue ive had before. is there anyway to remove that without running windowed ?

  36. windowed mode is awful. pulls you out of the immersion when you end up with a border

  37. I could get it running smoothly and all, but it crashed when I went between areas. I suspected it was the auto-save function that crashed the game. But it happened every time, no matter fix I downloaded. But I try this.
