This is the first Icelandic film I have ever had in my best of the year lists and probably the very first i have ever viewed from that part of the world. ‘Heartstone’ was made in 2016 and I saw it on cable last year and then purchased a copy on Ebay. It is the beautifully filmed tale of a pair of best friends who are just at the outset of their sexual awakening. Living in a small fishing village leaves little room for being ‘different’ but both boys in their own way experience that and the film skillfully navigates their own rite of passage into adolescence. The burgeoning same sex attraction by one for the other is tricky terrain to depict in an honest and realistic way. The young actors in the lead roles are phenomenal and it is no easy task directing young people; let alone some of the delicate and awkward scenes played out between the boys and the girls that they interact with. Handsomely shot and sensitively handled by all, ‘Heartstone’ was another wonderful surprise.
