Breckenridge troll Isak Heartstone gets a new home with artist Thomas Dambo

It’s been a long, strange journey for Isak Heartstone. The Breckenridge troll is one of 150 wooden trolls across the world, made by Danish artist Thomas Dambo of recycled wood. The troll debuted in summer 2018 to acclaim… and too much traffic, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to the quiet Wellington neighborhood, where locals were angry about crowds, noise and people peeing in their bushes. A few months later, town council voted to remove the troll, leading to a PR nightmare: Isak’s «decapitation» and hibernation.

In May 2019, Isak got his home and heart back, when four of Summit’s youngest heart experts helped Dambo put the final touch on his work: a heart-shaped stone — the same stone the four girls gave Dambo while he was building the original troll in Wellington.

The new Breck troll is found on Boreas Pass Road behind the Breckenridge ice rink, about 300 yards away from the Illinois Gulch Trailhead.
